KARIBU! (WELCOME!) I am happy to again invite you to another safari in Africa! The details are sketchy, but we are thinking of East Africa for Summer 2003.
SCC: Everyone is Welcome!Everyone is welcome to join any of the safaris or expeditions offered by St. Charles Community College. Although college credit is available, you are welcome to join us just for fun. And fun it is! Our previous African safaris have been great adventures... just ask anyone who has gone with us! Or ask anyone who has heard our stories or seen the slides and videos we =ve shown at our Lunchtime Seminars!=ve already had students from SLU, UMSL, SMSU, SLCC, and other schools join us. It is not only the learning experience of a lifetime --you=ll also make new friends as you create a wonderful adventure together. And remember, optional college credit is available. If you want to, you can also participate in fund-raising efforts to bring down the cost of your trip! Community members... Any member of the greater St. Charles County community,or communities from the surrounding area and beyond, are very welcome on our trips. In fact, half our travelers on SCC safaris are not college students. They =ve included business people, retired folks, travel enthusiasts, nature lovers, ... ALL kinds of people! We=ve had folks from St. Peters, Wentzville, St. Louis, even as far away as Wisconsin, Ohio, and Oregon.Family members... SCC safaris have included husbands, wives and other family members. If you are thinking of joining us, why not bring a family member or friend? Both single travelers and those travelling with friends or family have enjoyed our trips.
I'll soon have more detailed information about our upcoming trip, but for now please email me your name and address and I'll post the details to you as soon as possible: Ecology of East Africa BIO 290 3 Credit Hours Course Director: Kevin Patton, Ph.D., Professor of Life Science (314-922-8000 Ext.4338) Course Description This course consists primarily of field observation of wildlife in the preserves and parks of East Africa. Students will have reading/film assignments, individual conferences with instructor, written assignments, as well as extensive field trips. This course provides a thorough introduction to the structure and function of African tropical savannas with an emphasis on the ecology of large vertebrates. A brief look at woodlands, rain forests, and aquatic ecosystems will be included. Travel Considerations: Students must arrange for travel according to the terms of the brochure and other information from New Horizons Safaris, an educational safari organizer. The trip is specifically designated as originating with St. Charles Community College and Dr. Kevin Patton. Prerequisite: To enroll in this class, a student must have had a 100-level biology course within the last five years or the permission of the course director. If a student does not meet the biology requirement, he or she may participate with the expectation that they may have some additional prepatory reading. Usually, a brief discussion with Dr. Patton will clarify these expectations. Student Work and Grading: Each student will be expected to confer with Dr. Patton prior to the trip. An individualized program of readings and/or video films plus some written work will be developed. Options for written work include journals/field notes, participation in a field guide project, essays, or other creative endeavors. Transferability: BIO 290 is currently listed as an option among General Education requirements for science at SCC. BIO 290 would ordinarily transfer as a science elective or science requirement to other institutions, but the student should research this on an individual basis. Noncredit Option: Travelers may participate in the SCC Safari without enrolling for academic credit. Graduate Credit Option: For those wishing graduate credit, an arrangement with a university to grant graduate credit is now being explored. Please contact Dr. Patton to inquire about the status of this arrangement. [Revised: July 1, 1998]
