 Here's Kevin,
otherwise known as Mshikaji (his kiswahili name), on the 1993
SCC Safari to East Africa with a
50 kilo (110 lb)
Nile Perch he just snagged in Lake Victoria.
Nile perch is a game species that was introduced to Lake
Victoria. This introduction had the unexpected result that many of the cichlids
(colorful, interesting cousins of mine) were wiped out! Ouch!
Unwilling to purchase another airfare for his
catch, perhaps even more unwilling to endure the other passengers comments about
the smell of a rotting fish carcass, Kevin did not bring home the fish.
Instead he donated it to the village on Rusinga Island --and it fed everyone!
Unbelievably, Kevin also hooked another, much
bigger, fish on the same outing! That one got away (of course).
Another angler on the same boat, who happened to be a professional
salmon fisherman, grabbed Kevin's tackle because he felt that Kevin
wasn't handling it properly. The "expert" then got the line
tangled in the boat's propellers . . . to the dismay of both Kevin and
the boat captain (a local fisherman of the Luo tribe). Later, the
"expert" hooked his own fish and showed off his professional skills.
You can see this "expertly caught" fish on the ground, under Kevin's
catch, in the photo.
