What is an eBook?
An eBook is the electronic version of a book. The electronic
version of our textbook (see above) includes the entire contents of every
chapter. It is downloaded from a website onto your computer for you to use.
How do I download the
eBook?
The eBook version of the textbook has to be downloaded from a website. The URL
of this site may occasionally change, but currently it is:
http://evolve.elsevier.com/Thibodeau
After you are there, you will see a link labeled
Access your eBook
Click that link and a new page will appear. I suggest printing out this
"Download and Install your eBook" page so you have all the instructions handy.
Follow the steps outlined in the instructions, summarized here:
First, click the appropriate installer program.
After the program is installed on your computer,
then you'll be at "Evolve Select" and will see the "VitalSource" store.
You will then have to register there to download the eBook.
During registration,
use the 20-digit pincode from the card in your textbook where it asks for
"Redemption Code".
After the pincode is accepted, you will see "Anatomy and Physiology" listed in
the left pane of the window. Click on the little "folder" icon there and
in the middle pane of the window you'll see the title "Anatomy and Physiology,
6th edition." Double-click the title and you'll be told you need to
download the eBook, so click the "Download" button.
It will take some time to download the whole book, so be patient. Once you
have downloaded it, you can always open it in this manner inside "Evolve Select"
which should now appear as an icon on your desktop.
Select "Help" in the top menu bar for help in using the various features of your
eBook.
How do I get a pincode?
The pincode needed to download the eBook is on a card bound into the textbook at
the very back, just one page in from the back cover.
If you don't have that card, which is likely if you have a used book, then you
can't download the eBook. I don't think the eBook can be purchased
separately. It is part of the price of a new book. I can't get a
pincode for you. Really--the only way is to have a new book (or a used book with
a pincode there that has never been used by a prior owner).
How do I use the eBook?
You probably don't want to use the eBook for everything. You will often
want to use your bound paper book version for a lot of your learning activities.
However, here a few things you may want to try with your eBook version:
-
Search for a particular topic or passage
-
The index is fine, but a computer search will find more
examples than the index
-
Often, topics come up in more than one chapter. If you
are researching an online test question, then the answer may be found in a
chapter other than the one you thought to look in.
-
Highlight and color code key information
-
You can highlight your paper textbook pages, too, but in your
eBook you can erase or change the highlights and keep tabs on what the
different colors mean
-
You can also attach notes to highlighted sections to remind
yourself of additional information or references like "this was on the
online test" or "he emphasized this in class" or "this is also explained in
Chapter 27" or "ask the professor about this one"
-
You can organize your notes and highlights into customizable
folders and refer to them later, where they'll be all arranged for you.
-
You can print out one chapter, or part of a chapter, at a time.
-
This might be useful for bringing to class during lectures
and discussions.
-
You may want to bring some parts to lab sessions to help
supplement the lab manual.
-
You may want to have your highlighted pages with you during a
group study session to help you study or answer questions from others.
-
IMPORTANT NOTE: printing out
complete chapters should be considered carefully. They are very, very
long when printed out this way. For example, Chapter 1 is almost a
hundred pages. So if you end up printing all the chapters, you may
have 3,000 to 4,000 pages to print!
-
EVEN MORE IMPORTANT NOTE: Don't
expect to use college resources (printers in the ACE Center or Library) for
printing out all this material. You must use
your OWN printer and paper!
-
At the end of the last semester of A&P you can burn any printouts of the book
that you have,
rather than the whole book.
-

It is YOUR
RESPONSIBILITY
to
contact help and resolve issues with the student resources
and their functions
--so give
yourself enough time to do that.
