Posted 10 December Online Tests Extended

Online tests 7, 8, 9 have been extended to Dec 12 (2pm) to accommodate those who have had power/connection issues from the ice storms.

Please try to use computers/connections in libraries, community centers, or here on campus if you are able to in order to finish your course.

Posted 2 December Lecture Schedule

If we should run out of time for all the subtopics of the Endocrine System during lecture class, you are responsible for learning the material on your own from the Learning Outline and textbook.  Fortunately, the core principles of endocrinology are covered in the online Previews and the very first part of the lecture material . . .all the rest is simply a set of examples of those core principles.

Posted 2 December Free Parking Notice

Free Parking requests made after noon on Dec 6 will not be honored.

Free Parking for any test will run only through 2pm Dec 10 at the latest.

Because Test 7 has been extended for everyone until Dec 10, and Tests 8 and 9 already run until Dec 10, you do not need to use Free Parking for those tests.

Grade Clarification
To further clarify some points regarding the COURSE GRADE in My Grades
at WebCT:

1. The Post Survey is open now, but the extra credit points will not
post until after the deadline (unlike online tests).

2. The extra credit points for clicker usage is not yet included in My
Grades. It will be posted after the last day of classes, but before the
final exams begin.

3. The extra-extra credit, including any Body Worlds material, has not
yet been posted. Sorry, but there's a lot of it and it's taking longer
than I thought to go through it all.
Posted 28 November Final Exam

The final exam will be held ONLY on Dec 10 and Dec 11 during normal class times.  If you miss an exam, you can come to another class's exam or use extra credit points to make up the exam.  You may NOT schedule a makeup exam.

For details on how the exam will work (pretty much like the Midterm Exam did) please see A&P 1 Exam Info.

This final will have 50 items.  About 10 of them will be questions from the Midterm Exam question set.  The rest will be from material after the Midterm Exam.  Each item will be worth 2 points.  There are no figures or diagrams on the test.

Posted 28 November Grade Grief

Don't forget!  Your COURSE GRADE in WebCT is NOT your average grade.  It's the grade you'd get at this moment if you didn't get any more points for any remaining tests or exams.  As the semester gets closer to the end, the higher that course will get (one hopes).

For a fuller explanation go to WebCT Help #18.  You'd be surprised what you can find at WebCT Help.

Posted 18 Oct Body World 3

Here is an ADDITIONAL extra credit opportunity that you may be interested in:

You may get credit for attending the BODY WORLD 3 exhibit at the St. Louis Science Center beginning Oct 19. For information, go to http://www.slsc.org/content.aspx?id=3255

To get credit, up to 10 points, you must do ALL of the following.

1. Attend the exhibit. Submit a photocopy of a ticket or receipt showing that you attended AND a photograph of you in front of the science center or exhibit entrance.

2. Along with the above, submit a brief statement about your experience at the exhibit (what you liked, didn't like, what you learned, etc.). It should be one or two paragraphs, but NOT more than one page.

The better written it is, the more points you'll get!

Deadline is Nov 15, as for all other extra credit.

Posted 27 Sep Mid Term Exam

Don't forget our Midterm Exam coming up in a couple of weeks.

  • It will cover only the material covered on Tests 1, 2, 3, and 4 (even though we'll have gone past those topics by then)
  • There will be 50 items on the exam (all answerable by scan sheet form)
  • You will have exactly 60 minutes for the exam.
  • Other exam instructions and announcements are found at www.lionden.com/ap1_exams.htm
Posted 27 Sep Allied Health Job Fair

Free! Attendance Prizes! Snacks!

All students are invited to the upcoming Allied Health Job Fair on Monday, October 8, 2007 in the Student Center, 205/206.  Several health-related employers have registered, each eager to talk with students about career opportunities.  The fair will begin at 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

For more info contact Martha Toebben at
636-922-8243 or toebben@stchas.edu

I also emailed you all a flyer in WebCT

Posted 26 Sep Preliminary Survey

Because the Preliminary Survey ended on 20 Sep, I am now able to upload the points for those who took it--which I have just done.  In WebCT, it will now show 5 pts for those who took the survey and 0 pts for those who didn't.

Posted 14 Sep In case you got a strange message Friday morning . . .

At approximately 8:30 AM today, 9/14/2007, the SSL certificate used to
secure the WebCT server by data encryption expired.  This created an
'expired' certificate message to be issued to any user connecting to
WebCT.  In most cases the user was able to accept the expired
certificate and continue into their WebCT courses, but in some cases
users were unable to access their courses.

A current SSL certificate was placed on the WebCT server to resolve this problem.  If you are still encountering difficulties logging into WebCT please contact the SCC Help Desk at (636) 922-8555.

Posted 14 Sep Course Organizer

You may have noticed that I added a feature called "Course Organizer" in WebCT.  That's an OPTIONAL, new feature that groups essential links into segments that correspond to the 9 major topics (and 9 online tests).  Thus, if you want, you can now go to one spot to link to the Learning Outline for a topic, any Mini Lessons for that topic, all the Previews, for that topic, and a link to the test page.  I can't link to an individual test, unfortunately.

Right now, I'm just building it, so for a while I'll be just a little ahead of where you are.   In other words, some of the later topics will be "empty" for a while.

You can always just do it the way you've been doing it and ignore this whole thing.  If you do use it, let me know if it seems to help at all.

Posted 31 Aug IMPORTANT: i > clicker status

Please check My Grades in WebCT IMMEDIATELY to see that the correct clicker ID# is associated with your record.

In My Grades, go to the very last entry iClicker # and check that against the clicker ID in small characters on the label on the back of your i>clicker (near the bottom).  Leading zeros (zeros at the beginning of the clicker ID number on your label) are LEFT OFF the iClicker # reported in WebCT.

If your clicker ID is incorrect, then notify me immediately by using the email feature of WebCT.

If your clicker ID is missing, then go to www.iclicker.com/register to get it into the system.  For directions on how to do this see my hints.

{NOTE: Currently, NO clicker points have been uploaded into WebCT yet, so do not be concerned that this item in My Grades is blank.}

Bookstore status:

They ran out of i > clickers again in the bookstore, but the clickers should be in stock on Wednesday morning when we get back from the Labor Day break (see next item below).

Posted 31 Aug Labor Day Holiday

On behalf of all members of the Faculty Association (American Federation of Teachers-Missouri/AFL-CIO), I give you my best wishes for a safe and happy Labor Day holiday!

Please note that SCC will be closed BOTH Monday and Tuesday for this holiday.

Posted 28 Aug i< clicker status

As of this morning, seven clickers remain at the bookstore.  Some folks left their names with the bookstore and those people were called last week when the new clicker arrived. As of this morning all those clickers held on reserve that were not already picked up were placed back on the shelf for general purchase.

If you need a clicker and arrive at the bookstore and no clickers are in stock, then notify the customer service desk and you can order one.  They are also available at other vendors such as amazon.com

Posted 27 Aug Locked out of Test 0?  "Ungraded" tests/quizzes?

Before you can take Test 0, you have to do the Student Understanding quiz at the top of the online test list in WebCT.  If the Student Understanding, Test 0, or any other online test is taken and it doesn't unlock things for you, or it doesn't appear in My Grades, it may be "ungraded."  Please go to http://www.lionden.com/webct12.htm to see how to avoid this happening again . . .and how to fix it when it does happen.

Posted 27 Aug Misinformation about the computers in LRC

I need to clarify some incorrect information that I passed along to you.  The computers in the computer lab in the "Information Commons" in the LRC behind the reference desk are NOT for student use.  It is instead reserved for a whole class to use at one time.

Posted 24 Aug i > clickers are here!

The bookstore now has more new i>clickers.  Get yours soon!

I may have one (perhaps two) used i>clickers coming in on Monday or Tuesday.  The first person to email me in WebCT gets on the waiting list first.

Posted 22 Aug i < clicker points
  1. Because of the issue regarding clicker availability in the SCC Bookstore, the "max" number of points will not include this first week.  So there is no penalty because of the bookstore glitch.  The sooner you get it, the better, however.

  2. In MY GRADES in WebCT, you will notice that there is a spot (way at the bottom for clicker points).  These do not show up there as you earn them.  Instead, they are uploaded to WebCT every few weeks.  So keep an eye on that to make sure that when they do post to WebCT, they seem accurate.  I need to know immediately if there is a problem, otherwise I CANNOT FIX IT.

Posted 22 Aug Kevin's schedule

When I gave you the class schedule, it listed "Anatomy& Physiology 2 BIO 241" for each class that I teach this semester.  However, that's wrong.  It should be "Anatomy & Physiology 1 BIO 240."

This is a good time to tell you that my schedule WILL BE THE SAME next semester for A&P 2!   Barring unusual circumstances.

Overturned truths

In the Learning Outline on Intro to A&P, the linked article "10 overturned truths" is no longer available.  The link has now been changed to a new article on the same topic, " Superseded scientific theories "

Safety First!

The safety handout was missing from the table at the first class. It will be distributed during the second class meeting.  In the mean time, please refer to the online version.

Attendance record

The hardcopy of your Student Understanding states (in item #5) that you are to keep attendance on a sheet of paper in the classroom.  That policy has changed and we now keep course attendance records by using the student response system (i>clicker).  The Student Understanding has been changed accordingly.
